From that group, a collective impact organization, Amplify Youth Health Collective, was launched to coordinate efforts with city and county organizations, nonprofits, school districts, and community and faith-based organizations. The goal of the model was to leverage resources and prevent duplication of efforts in support of a shared vision that all young people in Tulsa will have quality sexual health education. Key partners include the Tulsa Health Department, Youth Services of Tulsa, and Tulsa area schools. PREP staff facilitate evidence-based and medically accurate sexual health curricula (sex education) to students in middle and high schools in Tulsa County. The goal of the program is to prevent teen births and sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV. PREP works with schools in Tulsa County to influence behavior change and increase education.YOUTH SERVICES OF TULSA SEXUAL HEALTH AWARENESS PROGRAM (SHA) SHA empowers youth to avoid high-risk behaviors, prevent pregnancy and STI’s and focus on achieving positive life goals. Teen Pregnancy Prevention Services uses proven evidence-based curricula delivered in group settings throughout the community. We also know that teen births include outcomes linked to poverty, negative health outcomes, low birth weight infants, low educational attainment (including barriers to completing high school or the inability to go on to post-secondary education). • That’s why continued sexual health education is so important, and we know that students and parents want sex ed in schoolsEFFECTIVE Topics include online Sexual health and digital safety, NEEDED education covers sexual violence more than basic prevention, goal- anatomy, and setting, and other life pregnancy and STI skills education, SUPPORTED prevention increasing health and safety for students In 2022, Amplify’s Community Needs Assessment showed In Tulsa, opt-out rates that 92% of adults in are typically less than Tulsa agreed that 4% across all Tulsa teens should have area schools access to sexual health education in schools 82% support teaching about all forms WHAT DO of birth control in schools OKLAHOMANS SAY? 89% believe STI prevention education SOURCE: AMBER is essential INTEGRATED SURVEY, 89% want students taught about FEBRUARY 2025 healthy relationships and consent 66% believe sexually active teens should have access to birth control 94% agree reducing teen pregnancy should be a public health prioritySTUDENT Total school-based sex ed participation (7th & 9th): NUMBERS 7,360 ACROSS THE HIV-only education across the Tulsa area (6th and TULSA AREA 10th grade): 4358 (24-25 YEAR) Special Populations at Transition Academies: 28 Human Growth & Development (5th TPS): 2137 14,692 Menstruation Education (4th grade TPS females): 427 Community-Based Education: 382 SEX ED SAVES Every student educated strengthens public health savings – PUBLIC HEALTH For every $1 invested in sex education DOLLARS returns $6.40 in community value through direct cost savings and prevention benefits Reducing Oklahoma’s teen birth rate by 10% could save over $10 million dollars per year In Oklahoma, 82.3% of teen births are covered by Medicaid and teen parents often rely on WIC, SNAP, and childcare benefitsFUNDING • Diversified funding has supported partner organizations throughout the last several years. Support includes Tulsa Area United Way, federal and state funding, local foundations, individual donors, and the City of Tulsa. • Most recently, funding through TANF, has supported this work with OKDHS state contracts issued to Youth Services of Tulsa, Union Public Schools, and Amplify (with Amplify subcontracting to THD) totaling around $1.9 million per year (for 3 years) • Since TANF funding, we have experienced significant massive growth of programs, young people reached, and schools and community-based organizations served.
